The FDA has issued a black box warning that the drug may not be safe and effective for people who have certain medical conditions. The drug has not been approved for use in the United States for treating erectile dysfunction.
A recent study found that men who take the drug for more than a year may have a 40 percent chance of experiencing a serious side effect, including a significant loss of sexual confidence, sexual dissatisfaction, difficulty achieving orgasm or a prolonged erection.
The FDA said the study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, did not provide any information about the safety or efficacy of the drug for treating ED.
"We are pleased to have approved Viagra for people who have ED and have been taking the drug for a long time," said Dr. Ian Read, director of the FDA's Office of Drug Evaluation. "We have a lot of confidence in our drugs," he said.

A South African man has been sentenced to five years in prison following a conspiracy to steal more than 2,000 tablets of Viagra, which were found in a man’s apartment in the western town of South Africa’s South Luce.
Mr Tariq Ahmed, 51, of Magdeburg, South Africa, was found guilty of the conspiracy charges in a trial earlier this month, after the investigation revealed the substance was found in a man’s apartment, where it is believed he was taking anabolic steroids, and was carrying the drugs into South Africa.
